What Is STEM?

Parent-Friendly STEM Explanation

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

At Code Ninjas, we do not teach these as four separate school subjects. Children use them together to solve problems and make things:

Science

Asking questions, making predictions, experimenting and observing what happens

T

Technology

Using coding, robotics, digital tools and electronics to create or control something

E

Engineering

Designing, building, testing, troubleshooting and improving

M

Math

Measuring, recognizing patterns, comparing results, using variables and working with data

For example, a child building a robot might:

  1. Predict how a sensor will respond.
  2. Program the robot.
  3. Design an attachment.
  4. Measure how far it travels.
  5. Test the result.
  6. Change the design and try again.
  7. Explain what worked and what did not.

That entire experience is STEM.

The YouthTech curriculum is intentionally based on durable skills rather than any one piece of software. Its core domains include computational thinking, engineering design, scientific inquiry, digital creation, problem-solving, communication and reflection.

A particularly strong recurring message is:

"STEM is not one subject. It is a way of thinking, building and solving problems."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this just coding?

No. Coding is one of the tools students use alongside robotics, engineering, electronics, science, math and design.

Will my child be on a computer the entire time?

No. Projects combine physical building and digital creation.

Does my child need previous experience?

No. Students begin at an appropriate level and progress from there.

Is this tutoring?

No. It is an enrichment and project-based learning program. The problem-solving and persistence students develop can support school learning, but this is not homework tutoring.

What will my child have to show for it?

Students complete games, robots, engineering builds, project plans, demonstrations, reflections and eventually larger capstone or portfolio projects.
